Three new biomethane plants will be built in Ukraine to export fuel

Vitagro Energy plans to build three biomethane production plants in the western regions of Ukraine. The new facilities are to be located in the Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, and Rivne regions.

The project will allow the company to expand its renewable energy operations. The company plans to supply the biomethane it produces to foreign markets, particularly to European Union countries.

The new industrial facilities are planned to be built in the villages of Nahiryanka in the Ternopil region, Ripna in the Khmelnytskyi region, and Zoria in the Rivne region. The combined capacity of the three plants is expected to reach 3 million cubic meters of biomethane per year.

In addition to gas production, the process cycle includes the annual production of 66,000 metric tons of high-quality liquid and solid organic fertilizers as a byproduct, as well as the generation of 0.4 megawatts of electricity to meet the plants’ own energy needs.

The total cost of implementing the investment project is estimated at 35.9 million U.S. dollars. Of this amount, the company is prepared to invest over 17.7 million dollars from its own funds, while the remainder—approximately 23.6 million dollars—is planned to be raised through equity and project financing.

The primary feedstock for the plants will be livestock waste from the company’s own farms, as well as additional sources of biomass, and the European Union has been identified as the key market for the fuel produced.

To date, the investor has already completed the process of leasing land plots for the future facilities, and the project itself is in the feasibility study phase.

Construction of each individual facility is expected to take about two years. According to the company’s preliminary financial estimates, once operating at full capacity, each of the three plants will generate between $3.7 million and $5 million in annual revenue and produce $1.8 million to $2.5 million in EBITDA per year.

Bioenergy Complexes in Ukraine
In May, the launch of several more similar projects was announced in Ukraine. In particular, in the Ternopil region, the company “Sokoliv Energy,” part of the OKKO Group, plans to build a biomethane complex.

At the same time, the agro-industrial group “Ukrprominvest-Agro,” through its subsidiary “UPI-Energy,” intends to build a bioenergy complex in the Vinnytsia region that will produce 13 million m³ of biomethane annually.

This is stated in the Ukraine Investment Catalogue 2026.
