National Local History Day: History and Significance of the Holiday

All-Ukrainian Local History Day is celebrated annually in Ukraine on May 28. It is a relatively new holiday, officially established in 2017, yet its history is closely linked to the development of the Ukrainian local history movement as far back as the 20th century.

May 28, 1925, is considered the official date of the institutionalization of Ukrainian local history. On this day, the Ukrainian Committee for Local History was established, bringing together researchers, historians, ethnographers, and everyone involved in the study of their native region.

What is local history

Local history is the study of the history, culture, traditions, nature, and way of life of a specific region or settlement. It helps preserve national memory, promote cultural heritage, and foster a love for one’s homeland.

Ukrainian local history encompasses various fields:

  • historical;
  • geographical;
  • literary;
  • ethnographic;
  • tourism;
  • archaeological.

Thanks to the work of local historians, archival documents, folk traditions, architectural landmarks, and important chapters of Ukrainian history are preserved.

The History of All-Ukrainian Local History Day

The idea of creating a separate professional and cultural holiday for local historians had been discussed in Ukraine for many years. As a result, in 2017, the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine established All-Ukrainian Local History Day.

The date was not chosen at random—May 28 is associated with the official establishment of the Ukrainian local history movement in 1925. This became a significant milestone for the development of science, education, and the country’s cultural life.
