Weak magnetic storms are expected to affect the Earth on June 15–16

UA NEWS 15 June 2026 12:21
Weak magnetic storms are expected to affect the Earth on June 15–16

From June 15 to 16, a calm geomagnetic environment with reduced solar activity is forecast for Earth.

According to official data from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the intensity of disturbances will not exceed the green level.

However, experts advise weather-sensitive individuals to pay attention to their well-being, as even minor disturbances in the magnetosphere can cause mild discomfort and fatigue.

On Monday, June 15, solar activity with a K-index of 3.7 (green level) is expected, corresponding to weak magnetic storms.

The following day, Tuesday, June 16, the intensity of geomagnetic field fluctuations will decrease even further.

Researchers forecast solar activity with a K-index of 3 (green level), which also corresponds to weak magnetic storms. At the same time, scientists remind us that such space forecasts are dynamic and subject to change.

A magnetic storm is a natural phenomenon caused by regular flares and eruptions on the Sun, which release a significant amount of solar energy.

This stream consists of charged particles moving rapidly in various directions, including toward our planet.

When they reach Earth’s magnetosphere, activity occurs that scientists call magnetic storms or solar storms. To measure their strength, scientists use the planetary K-index on a scale from 0 to 9.

Fluctuations ranging from a K-index of 1 to a K-index of 4 are considered minor and often go unnoticed by people on Earth.

However, any disturbances exceeding a reading of 5 are classified as red-level storms and can cause disruptions in cellular communications, navigation, and satellite operations.

The main danger of powerful geomagnetic storms to the population lies in their direct impact on the human cardiovascular system. Magnetic storms affect atmospheric pressure, so some people may experience headaches, fatigue, and stress.

This is reported by NOAA.
