Hromadske journalist Yevhen Shulhat was released from the TCC and given a summons to appear before the medical examination commission
Yevhen Shulhat, an investigative journalist for hromadske who had been taken to the Kyiv City Military Registration and Enlistment Office the day before, has been released from the facility. According to media reports, he was handed a summons to appear before a military medical commission.
It was previously reported that the journalist had been detained by police and escorted to the Military Medical Examination Center. He is now required to undergo the necessary procedures prescribed by law.
According to the publication’s update, the detained journalist was released that same evening.
"On July 27 in Kyiv, police detained hromadske journalist Yevhen Shulhat. Police officers stopped the taxi in which the journalist was traveling and handcuffed him. According to law enforcement officials, the alleged reason for the stop was the journalist’s violation of military registration rules. However, according to documents available to the editorial office, the journalist has not violated any military registration rules,” the publication stated in a post on its website.
According to Yevhen Shulhat, police officers used physical force against him. At Hromadske, the journalist had been working, in particular, on stories related to corruption among law enforcement officials.
“It is unclear how police officers could have known about a taxi passenger’s violation of military registration rules. At the same time, the police were not interested in the driver’s documents, which suggests that the detention was targeted,” said Yaroslava Volvach, head of the investigative department.
The Kyiv police commented on the journalist’s detention. They stated that officers stopped the car in which Shulhat was traveling to check his documents. According to law enforcement, he refused. According to law enforcement officials, they took Shulhat to one of the district military registration and enlistment offices. Based on preliminary information from the police, the journalist allegedly did not undergo a military medical examination in accordance with established procedure.
The Kyiv City Military Medical Commission and Enlistment Office confirmed that Shulhat was taken to one of the district centers. According to the commission, he allegedly “failed to undergo the military medical examination in a timely manner and in accordance with established procedures.” He has now been referred for a medical examination, the Military Registration and Enlistment Office stated.
