The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) foiled a large-scale sabotage operation planned by Russian military intelligence.

This was reported by the SBU.

Law enforcement officers detained a GRU agent who was setting up explosives caches in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Uman, and Odesa.

His task was to prepare storage sites for future terrorist attacks targeting Ukrainian military personnel.

Investigations established that the detained individual is a 55-year-old resident of Odesa region and a former law enforcement officer.

According to the SBU, he came under the attention of Russian special services after posting anti-Ukrainian comments on social media. After recruitment, the agent received instructions from GRU handlers and coordinates for pre-prepared caches.

From one of these caches, the perpetrator retrieved components for three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) made from plastid explosives and electric detonators, as well as two anti-personnel mines.

He equipped the devices with remote detonation systems and transported them to new hiding places, mostly located on the outskirts of the cities — away from residential areas.

According to the occupiers’ plan, other agents were supposed to later retrieve the explosives from the caches and place them under vehicles of Ukrainian service members.

It is worth recalling that in Kirovohrad region, an FSB agent was sentenced for attempting to set fire to an electrical substation.

Additionally, the SBU “Alpha” unit destroyed Russian air defence systems worth $4 billion in 2025.
