General Staff reports hundreds of cases of Russia using chemical agents on the frontline
In December 2024, Russian forces used munitions filled with hazardous chemical substances against Ukraine’s Defence Forces on 434 occasions.
This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The statement refers to specialised munitions that the enemy employs alongside “conventional” means of firepower. Military commanders stress that such actions violate international rules of warfare and obligations related to the prohibition of chemical weapons.
According to the General Staff, since February 2023 the use of hazardous chemical substances by Russia has taken on a systematic character. Since then, 5,389 cases of the use of such munitions on the battlefield have been recorded.
These incidents are documented by radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance units of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The report also specifies that the recorded means include K-51 and RG-VO type munitions, which are classified as riot control agents but are prohibited from use as a method of warfare.
The General Staff emphasises that Russia is “grossly violating” the rules of war and ignoring the norms and obligations of the international Chemical Weapons Convention.
The military adds that documentation of these episodes is ongoing, and that the very fact of the regular use of hazardous substances is a separate signal to international partners about the escalation of methods of pressure on the frontline.
Previously, it was reported that occupiers in the temporarily occupied Luhansk region are searching for gold while miners remain unpaid. It was also reported that severe frosts on the frontline have slowed the occupiers’ attacks.
