HUR reveals specifications of the new jet-powered “Geran-5” drone

Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) has released information about a new Russian strike unmanned aerial vehicle, the Geran-5. According to HUR, the drone is equipped with a jet engine and can reach speeds of up to 600 kilometres per hour.

This was reported by the Telegram channel of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

According to intelligence data, the drone resembles the Iranian Karrar, with most of its units identical to those used in other Alabuga-produced “Geran” drones. The enemy is also exploring the possibility of launching the drone from a Su-25 attack aircraft.

Main characteristics of the “Geran-5”:

  • Maximum take-off weight: 850 kg
  • Cruising speed: 450–600 km/h
  • Endurance: about 2 hours
  • Estimated range: up to 950 km
  • Maximum altitude: 6 km (actual recorded use: from 200 m to 3 km)

The powerplant is a Chinese TELEFLY TF-TJ2000A turbojet engine with a thrust of 200 kgf (1,960 newtons).

What it has in common with other “Gerans”

The drone uses components similar to other Geran variants, including: an FCU flight controller, SADRA/MINSOO inertial navigation system, Kometa-M12 satellite navigation system with a 12-element CRP antenna, a Tracker V3 telemetry data transmission system based on a Raspberry microcomputer and 3G/LTE modems, an Xingkai Tech XK-F358 MESH modem, and others.

The fuselage skin, wings and tail surfaces are made of carbon fibre, while the load-bearing structure is constructed from aluminium profiles and steel.

For marking the drones, the enemy uses the same experimental “E” series previously applied to Geran-2 modifications equipped with R-60 missiles and MANPADS.

Components of the new drone

HUR specialists have identified an electronic component base originating from three countries: China, the United States and Germany.

“The expansion of the range of Russian strike weapons made on Iranian prototypes, as well as the continued use of components manufactured in countries of the free world, indicates the need to strengthen efforts to block aggressor states’ access to technologies,” HUR added.

HUR also denies claims about a halt in the transfer of intelligence to the United States.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that over the past year France has provided Ukraine with around two-thirds of all intelligence information, a role that had previously been played predominantly by the United States.

Russia may be planning strikes on substations of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, according to HUR.
