Kyiv residents are advised to close their windows due to fires in the region
Due to fires in the Kyiv region, the capital may experience smoke and a smell of burning. The Kyiv City State Administration advises residents of Kyiv’s Right Bank to close their windows, spend less time outdoors, and temporarily avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors. At the same time, air quality levels in the southwestern outskirts of the capital currently remain within normal limits.
Kyiv authorities have issued a warning about possible smoke due to ongoing fires in the Kyiv region. This is most likely to affect the right bank of the capital. A smell of burning may be noticeable in the city, especially if the smoke drifts toward Kyiv.
The Kyiv City State Administration advises Kyiv residents who smell smoke not to ignore basic safety precautions. “Due to the fires in the Kyiv region, smoke may appear and a burning smell may be detected on the right bank of the capital. If you smell smoke, we recommend: closing your windows; minimizing time spent outdoors if possible; and refraining from intense physical activity outdoors,” the statement reads.
What Kyiv residents are advised to do
If you smell smoke in your apartment or on the street, the first thing you should do is close the windows. This will help reduce the amount of smoke and combustion byproducts entering the room. The Kyiv City State Administration also advises spending as little time as possible outdoors. This is especially important during periods when the smell of smoke becomes stronger or smoke is visible in the air.
Another recommendation is to temporarily avoid intense physical activity outdoors. In other words, it’s best to postpone jogging, vigorous workouts, or prolonged outdoor sports activities. If the smell of smoke subsides and the fire situation stabilizes, these restrictions may be revised in accordance with further announcements from city authorities.
What is the current air quality in Kyiv?
At the same time, the Kyiv City State Administration emphasized that, according to data from city monitoring sensors, air quality in the southwestern outskirts of Kyiv is currently rated as satisfactory. In other words, at this time, the readings do not exceed established standards. For most people, this means there is no immediate health threat due to air quality.
“This means that air quality readings are within normal limits and there is no health risk for most people,” the Kyiv City State Administration noted. At the same time, the situation may vary depending on the neighborhood and wind direction. Therefore, the presence of a smoky odor in certain parts of the city does not necessarily mean that air pollution levels throughout Kyiv have exceeded the standard.
Who Should Be Especially Cautious
According to the Kyiv City State Administration, people who are sensitive to air pollution may experience some discomfort even when overall levels remain within normal limits. This also applies to people with respiratory conditions. For them, the smell of smoke or burning may cause unpleasant sensations. “At the same time, people who are sensitive to air pollution or have respiratory conditions may experience minor discomfort,” the Kyiv City State Administration added.
Therefore, if they detect the smell of smoke, such individuals should remain indoors with windows closed and monitor further updates from city authorities. Currently, there are no reports of a critical deterioration in air quality in the capital. This specifically refers to possible localized smoke due to fires in the region, so residents are advised to monitor the situation and follow the recommendations of the Kyiv City State Administration. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
