In the Chernihiv region, an uncle pulled his 10-year-old nephew from under the rubble after a Russian strike
A 10-year-old boy who was injured in a Russian attack on the village of Volodkova Divytsia in Chernihiv Oblast suffered burns over 40% of his body. The child is currently in a hospital in Kyiv. The village head, Oleksandr Gavrylko, told Suspilne about this.
A strike drone hit a private home where, at the time of the attack, the 10-year-old boy, his 55-year-old uncle, and his 76-year-old grandmother were present. According to Oleksandr Gavrylko, the child was pinned down by debris, and his uncle began pulling him out from under the rubble.
“The ‘Shahed’ drone struck the very room where the boy and his uncle were. The boy was slightly pinned down, and his uncle was pulling him out from under the rubble. As he was pulling him out, everything started to catch fire. And his uncle practically pulled his nephew out of the flames. The boy suffered severe burns. An ambulance transported them immediately to the city of Chernihiv, where he was examined. The grandmother and her husband were sent home, while the boy was transferred to Kyiv, to “Okhmatdyt,” where he was found to have burns covering about 43% of his body. He will undergo skin grafts.”

Natalia Mishok, 65, recalls the morning of October 4. Around 10:00 a.m., a Russian drone crashed near her house, and the house caught fire. On the afternoon of October 5, fellow villagers helped the woman clear the rubble and debris from her yard.
“I was preparing mushrooms. I heard a humming, a roaring sound. I thought, ‘Oh my God, what is that?’ I cracked the door open, and then—boom! Everything shook, and things started falling from up there. I got scared and ran to close the door. Then I turned around: the window was gone. If I hadn’t been standing by the door, it might have killed me or cut me.”

Natalia managed to save only her documents.
“Everything’s destroyed. My husband and I built it together. It’s slated for demolition. The house is uninhabitable.”
The blast also destroyed the house belonging to Natalia’s neighbors. In total, the village head said, two houses were destroyed as a result of the Russian attack.
“Right now, both families are staying with relatives. Going forward, I think we’ll work on finding a way to help them with housing.”

Nine other houses in the village were damaged. One of them is home to 74-year-old Nadiya Boiko.
“It started rumbling, and then—boom! I was standing by the gas stove, the roof was falling on me, and there was a light bulb—so I grabbed that board to hold it up. Just so the roof wouldn’t crush me. Well, the windows were blown out, the doors were blocked and twisted—I couldn’t get out of the house. Two houses were on fire right there, and I couldn’t get out. Then my nephew arrived and pulled me out of the house.”

The woman’s dog was later found up in a tree.
“This guy Tolik came over from across the street, and I said, ‘Tolik, the dog’s gone.’ He said, ‘Look, auntie, there he is, sitting on the mulberry tree.’ I said, ‘Tolyk, help me get him down—I can’t reach him.’ He pulled him down, and the dog was limping on one leg. Maybe a gust of wind blew him up onto the mulberry tree… He’s such a tiny little dog,” says Nadiya Boiko.

Nadiya says she doesn’t know how to rebuild the house.
“How am I supposed to rebuild—on that pension you’ll get—four thousand? It’s terrible, terrible. How much longer will this damned Putin keep suffocating and oppressing us? We already lost everything in the ’90s, and now my grandfather has died too—I’m all alone.”
