NATO condemned Moscow’s nuclear rhetoric after the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — said it was ready to deploy its entire arsenal if Kaliningrad were threatened. Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart said that Russia had handed NATO an informal document, to which the Alliance sent a response.

According to Hart, NATO is a defensive Alliance, and its activities and exercises pose no threat to any part of Russia. She also called on Moscow to stop its unprovoked war against Ukraine. The Guardian reports on NATO’s statement and the intensification of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

Strikes on Kyiv

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched ballistic missiles and dozens of jet-powered drones at Kyiv. According to the publication, Russian forces intensified daytime attacks on the capital, using drones that fly too fast and too high to be intercepted by ground-based air defense systems.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it had carried out a nighttime strike on two data centers in Kyiv, as well as attacks on a cargo vessel in the Black Sea and a vessel carrying military cargo in the port of Odesa. These claims by the Russian ministry are not presented in the report as independently confirmed.

Remote learning and strike on Sumy

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv switched to remote operations at least until October 16 due to the worsening security situation. The university’s main campus is located near the National Academy of Sciences, which, according to the report, was hit by a drone: one person was killed.

In Sumy, Russian guided aerial bombs struck a school, said Oleh Hryhorov, head of the regional authorities. According to him, two people were killed and another six were injured, including three children. Staff of the institution evacuated 100 people.
