Occupiers attacked downtown Kyiv with a modernized "Lancet" drone — Main Intelligence Directorate

On March 16, Russian occupation forces used a "Lancet"-type loitering munition—which had undergone significant technical upgrades—to strike the central part of Kyiv.

Specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate identified the remains of a downed drone, confirming the expanded range and capabilities of this type of weapon.

Previously, the primary purpose of the “Lancets” was considered to be the destruction of military equipment and firing positions directly on the front line or in the operational depth.

However, the attack on the capital indicates the enemy’s attempt to use these drones to carry out missions at significantly greater distances from the combat zone.

The “Lancet,” also known as “Product-51,” is manufactured by Zala Aero Group, a subsidiary of the Kalashnikov Concern.

In addition to it, the aggressor uses a cheaper counterpart called “Skalpel,” which, due to the specific design of its wings, is often referred to as the “little brother” of the main model.

Both types of drones are typically controlled by an operator in real time, though in updated versions, the enemy is introducing elements of autonomous guidance.

According to intelligence reports, the Russians are attempting to integrate artificial intelligence modules, specifically using technological solutions based on Nvidia Jetson platforms.

During an examination of the wreckage of the “Lancet” and “Scalpel,” experts identified 62 foreign-made electronic components.

The vast majority of these parts originate from the United States, Switzerland, and China, indicating the complex ways in which the Russian defense-industrial complex circumvents international sanctions.

As a reminder, on the night of March 23, Russian terrorists launched a massive attack on Ukraine, deploying hundreds of strike drones.

The UN Security Council will also discuss Russia’s missile attacks against Ukraine on March 23.
