It is impossible to predict when the war in Ukraine will end, says Zaluzhny

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom and former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated that it is impossible to pinpoint an exact timeline for the end of the war. In his view, Ukraine must independently assess its own resources and formulate a clear long-term strategy.

He made these remarks during a conversation with students.

According to Zaluzhny, any predictions regarding the duration of the war—whether it be one year, five years, or ten years—have no practical value.

“I am an absolute realist and know a little bit about war. It is impossible to predict the end of a war, especially one like the one in Ukraine. We can only see the factors that influence it,” he emphasized.

He stressed that the state’s key task is to determine the limits of its own capacity to wage war and to understand the ultimate goal.

Zaluzhny noted that the absence of a clear strategy could lead to the country’s exhaustion without achieving any results.

He stressed that strategic planning must take into account the state’s resources and allow the war to be concluded in such a way that the outcome does not have to be “artificially presented as a victory.”

Separately, he mentioned the possibility of unforeseen events—the so-called “black swan”—which could change the course of the war, but one cannot rely solely on this.

“Trust no one. Because this war depends on a multitude of factors. Everything will depend on how much we ourselves want to wage war and how we act on that desire,” Zaluzhny concluded.

The Kremlin is currently not demonstrating any real willingness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and end the war. Despite statements about an alleged desire for peace, Russia uses such signals primarily as a tool for information influence. The Center for Countering Disinformation explains that such statements are aimed at creating the illusion of openness to negotiations, while Moscow is not taking any real steps to end the war. In this way, the Kremlin is attempting to influence the international community and weaken support for Ukraine.

The Kremlin has announcedthe conditions for a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy.
