Poland scrambles F-16s to intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea

In international airspace over the Baltic Sea, Polish F-16 fighters successfully intercepted and escorted a Russian Il-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft.

According to the official statement from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, the incident occurred on April 8 while the Russian aircraft was conducting a reconnaissance mission.

A pair of Polish Air Force F-16s was scrambled to identify the unknown object. The pilots visually confirmed that the target was a Russian Il-20 and provided escort for the duration of its flight.

Although the aircraft of the aggressor state did not violate Poland’s national borders, its actions were classified as dangerous. The Polish command stressed: “The Russian aircraft did not submit a flight plan and had its transponder turned off.”

Such behavior constitutes a serious violation of international aviation rules. The lack of a transponder signal and a pre-agreed route creates significant risks for civil aviation, which actively uses this airspace.

Military experts note that interception operations like this are standard practice for protecting NATO airspace. “They allow the assessment of flight intent, evaluation of threat levels, and if necessary, adjustment of the aircraft’s route or forcing it to land,” explained representatives of the Polish Armed Forces.

Separately, Poland detained a suspect in the arson of a Czech factory and extended border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October.
