Russia begins losing technological capabilities in nuclear engineering

Russia’s state-owned corporation Rosatom has purchased two turbogenerator units for the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant from the Chinese company Dongfang Turbine.
This indicates the degradation of Russia’s machine-building industry and deepens Russia’s technological dependence on China, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

According to intelligence data, Rosatom has already approached Chinese manufacturers with a request to transfer technologies for low-speed steam turbines used in nuclear power plant reactors. Deliveries are planned to be completed by 2030.

The production cost of Russian-made turbines is about one-third higher than that of their Chinese counterparts, while domestic manufacturing capacities are unable to meet construction schedules for new power units at the Leningrad, Kursk, and Smolensk nuclear power plants.

The Foreign Intelligence Service emphasizes that this situation represents not only a failure in the development of Russia’s nuclear industry but also long-term technological dependence on China, covering supply chains, servicing, and modernization.

Meanwhile, Russian State Duma deputy Mikhail Sheremet called for nuclear weapons tests to include strikes on mock-ups of the Pentagon, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower.
