Russia threatens to attack Western peacekeepers in Ukraine
Russia has warned that the declaration of the so-called “coalition of the willing” on security guarantees for Ukraine is allegedly far removed from a peaceful settlement, and that the deployment of Western troops on Ukrainian territory would be regarded as an intervention.
This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, according to Russian propaganda media.
Commenting on the declaration on security guarantees signed by members of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris on 6 January, Zakharova claimed that the document was “extremely far from a peaceful resolution”.
According to her, the declaration is allegedly aimed not at achieving lasting peace and security, but at the “continuation of militarisation, escalation and expansion of the conflict”.
She also threatened that if Western troops or military facilities are deployed in Ukraine, Moscow would consider this a threat to its own security. In that case, she said, Western units and facilities on Ukrainian territory would be regarded as “legitimate military targets”.
In addition, Zakharova stated that what she described as the plans of the West and Ukraine are becoming “increasingly dangerous and destructive for the future of Europe and its population”.
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany was ready to deploy a military contingent to NATO countries bordering Ukraine once an agreement on a ceasefire is reached.
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the deployment of Italian troops in Ukraine is not envisaged. The decision, she noted, complies with the principles of voluntariness and constitutional procedures in supporting Ukraine.
