Russia has unveiled a new drone, the Upir-K, capable of destroying buildings
Russia’s “UralDronePlant” has unveiled a new fixed-wing drone, the “Upir-K,” with a payload capacity of up to 12 kg. The manufacturer claims that the drone is capable of striking targets at significant distances and causing damage to entire buildings.
The new UAV was showcased at an exhibition of the Russian defense-industrial complex in Tyumen. Its stated flight range is 50–80 km, so the potential threat posed by such a drone primarily concerns frontline territories and areas near the line of contact.
Information about the new drone’s specifications is still limited. Russian sources cite varying ranges—from 50 to 80 km. A representative of UralDronePlant stated that the drone is capable of flying up to 80 km. At the same time, TASS and some other Russian media outlets report a range of about 50 km.
In terms of design, the “Upir-K” belongs to the category of aircraft-type strike drones. Its purpose is to strike ground targets. However, the Russian manufacturer has not yet disclosed all of the drone’s technical specifications, including its exact dimensions, speed, and guidance systems.
The “Upir-K” is an evolution of Russia’s “Upir” line of attack UAVs. Previous versions of this drone were used by the Russian military against Ukrainian positions and equipment. According to the developers, the new model has an increased payload, which potentially makes it more dangerous to fortifications and other ground targets.
If the claimed specifications of the “Upir-K” are accurate, a drone with a payload of up to 12 kg could pose a threat to civilian infrastructure, especially when targeting buildings, industrial facilities, or other structures. At the same time, the manufacturer’s claim of “destroying an entire building” should not be equated with a guaranteed ability to demolish any structure. The consequences of a strike depend on the type of munition, the point of impact, the building’s construction, and other factors.
The stated range of 50–80 km also means that the main area of potential threat is the frontline and areas close to the frontline. Based on its currently stated specifications, the “Upir-K” is not a long-range drone capable of traveling hundreds of kilometers to cities in Ukraine’s rear.
At the same time, the emergence of UAVs with a larger payload could pose additional risks to populated areas near the front line. Such a drone could be particularly dangerous if used against dense urban areas, where the explosion of a heavy warhead could cause significant damage.
