The SBU has charged a Russian judge in connection with the imprisonment of prisoners of war
The Security Service of Ukraine and the Office of the Prosecutor General have announced charges in absentia against a judge of the Southern District Military Court of the Russian Federation for the unlawful deprivation of liberty of captured soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine.
The investigation established that in August 2024, the suspect presided over a sham trial and sentenced a captured Ukrainian serviceman to 19 years in prison on fabricated charges.
By his actions, the official violated the provisions of the Geneva Convention, as the Ukrainian serviceman has the status of a prisoner-of-war and is not subject to criminal prosecution for participating in hostilities.
The Russian judge is charged with violating the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Measures are currently underway to bring the perpetrator to justice.
