A damaged building at the Bernardine Monastery in Lviv has been declared unsafe

A detailed survey of the historic complex of the 17th-century Bernardine Monastery in Lviv, which was damaged by an enemy attack, has been completed.

This was announced by Yevhen Boiko, the executive secretary of the Lviv City Council.

The commission officially declared a residential building on the complex’s grounds unsafe and uninhabitable due to a direct hit and significant structural damage.

The monastery complex as a whole, which includes St. Andrew’s Church, the monks’ cells, and the defensive walls, sustained varying degrees of damage.

The Executive Secretary of the Lviv City Council Executive Committee reported that the church itself sustained only minor damage thanks to previously installed protective measures.

Of the church’s 16 unique stained-glass windows, four were completely shattered, and another sustained partial damage.

The bell tower, built in 1734, and the archive building, where eight windows were shattered by the blast wave, also sustained damage.

The most severe damage was recorded in a residential building, which bore the brunt of the blast.

The site has sustained massive damage: the roof and floor slabs have been completely destroyed, the wooden elements have been completely burned, and the load-bearing walls are covered with deep cracks.

“The building is structurally unsound and uninhabitable; parts of the structure may continue to collapse,” experts noted after inspecting the interior.

Inside, the collapse of stairwells and the loss of important historical interior elements due to the intense fire have been documented.

As a reminder, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized UNESCO’s statement regarding the attack on Lviv.

The OSCE will also demand that those responsible for the attack on Lviv be held accountable.
