In Mariupol, occupiers failed to pay promised compensation for destroyed housing

In the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol in the Donetsk region, Russian occupiers have still not paid local residents the promised compensation for housing destroyed during the fighting.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).

The Center notes that against the backdrop of propaganda statements about an alleged “New Year’s idyll” in the city, more and more stories are emerging of people who for years have been unable to receive any assistance from Russia.

In particular, the story of a Mariupol resident who lost her apartment in 2022 has gained public attention. The occupation authorities demolished her building but refused to provide compensatory housing, explaining that the documents had been “lost.” The woman is now being threatened with eviction from a friend’s apartment, with officials citing so-called “ownerless property” regulations.

The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasizes that despite the active construction of mortgage-based residential complexes in Mariupol for newcomers from Russia, no housing is предусмотрено (allocated) for local residents as part of this so-called “reconstruction.” People who try to speak publicly about the problem face pressure and threats.

The Center stressed that Mariupol has been turned into a showcase “window display” of Putin’s reconstruction, which in reality is nothing more than a propaganda set. In practice, the occupiers are pursuing a policy of population replacement, leaving local residents without housing and without any remorse.

In Ukraine, the identity of the individual who gave the order to bomb the Mariupol Drama Theater, the maternity hospital, and a children’s hospital has been established. It is Russian Colonel Sergey Atroshchenko, who was born in the city of Ovruch in the Zhytomyr region.

In March 2023, an independent international commission of inquiry into violations in Ukraine determined that Russian forces bear responsibility for the attacks on the Mariupol Drama Theater and the railway station in Kramatorsk.
