Ukraine faces a demographic disaster amid ongoing war

Due to the ongoing military conflict, Ukraine has become a "country of widows and orphans," reports CNN. Ukrainian demographer Ella Libanova states that Ukraine has lost about 10 million people — including those who have died and those who left the country. Additionally, some 6 million people, mostly women and children, have left Ukraine since 2022 and registered abroad as refugees.

Libanova emphasizes that this is a catastrophe since no country can survive without its population. Even before the war, Ukraine's population density was low and unevenly distributed. The birth rate has dropped below one child per woman, compared to 1.4 in Europe.

These demographic shifts pose serious challenges for Ukraine's future, calling for urgent measures to stabilize the population and support families.
