Ukraine is using AI to clear minefields
Ukraine has developed the GRIT system, which uses artificial intelligence and national data to identify priority areas for demining. The first areas to be cleared will be those where demining will have the greatest impact on the return of residents and the recovery of communities.
Timur Pistruga, head of the Ukrainian Deminers Association, spoke about the system during the 4th International Conference on Mine Action in Baku.
AI Will Help Set Priorities
According to Pistryuga, the GRIT system was developed by the Ukrainian government.
“The Ukrainian government has developed GRIT, a data-driven prioritization system that integrates national data and artificial intelligence to identify areas where demining can have the greatest socioeconomic impact,” he noted.
This goes beyond simply clearing areas of mines and other explosive hazards. Demining must create the conditions for the return of residents, the operation of schools and medical facilities, the attraction of investment, and the full recovery of communities.
“Demining areas is a crucial prerequisite for their recovery, as it enables the return of residents, the development of education and healthcare, the attraction of investment, and the restoration of a full-fledged community life,” Pistruga emphasized.
Demining alone is not enough
The head of the Ukrainian Deminers Association stressed that the return of people to cleared territories must be accompanied by education on the risks associated with explosive ordnance.
According to him, this involves not only informing the public but also fostering safe behavior.
A separate component of mine action should be comprehensive assistance to people who have been affected by mines and other explosive hazards, as well as their full reintegration into society.
