Ukraine demands real action from the UN Security Council after the “Oreshnik” strike
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andrii Melnyk, has clearly outlined Kyiv’s expectations ahead of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
He stressed that standard condemnations of the aggressor no longer work and that effective mechanisms of pressure on Moscow are required.
The meeting is scheduled for 12 January at 3:00 p.m. New York time.
On 8 January at 11:47 p.m., Russian forces launched an “Oreshnik” intermediate-range ballistic missile at infrastructure facilities in Lviv Region. The aerial target travelled along a ballistic trajectory at a speed of 13,000 km/h, leaving no time for evacuation.
According to the Western Air Command, the launch was likely carried out from the Kapustin Yar test range in Russia.
Reuters reported that the missile struck a workshop of a state-owned enterprise near the Polish border, leaving craters in a forested area.
Despite the power of the weapon, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, the damage was minimal. OSINT analysts suggest that the intended target was an aircraft repair plant in Lviv.
It should be recalled that Putin’s “Oreshnik” missile is assembled from Soviet-era components.
It was also reported that an “Oreshnik” missile struck a workshop of a state-owned enterprise in Lviv.
