The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has lost its external power supply for the 20th time due to actions by the Russian Federation

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has once again lost its external power supply due to Russian attacks. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy, this is the 20th time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion that the plant has lost connection to the power grid—this time due to damage to the 330-kV “Ferosplavna-1” power line.

Today, for the 20th time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Zaporizhzhia NPP was left without an external power supply. Due to military actions by the Russian Federation, the plant lost power from the “Ferosplavna-1” power line (330 kV).

Following the incident, emergency diesel generators automatically started up to provide backup power for cooling the reactor core and maintaining other vital nuclear safety functions at the facility.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy once again emphasizes that through its military actions in Ukraine, particularly around the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russia is posing a threat to global nuclear safety. The only way to avoid a catastrophe at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is to fully demilitarize the plant and transfer it to the full control of a licensed Ukrainian operator.
