Putin’s statements indicate an intention to continue the war — ISW

Recent statements by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin indicate that he is not considering a peace settlement limited to Ukraine alone. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) note that the Kremlin’s military ambitions go beyond the Ukrainian issue and may include broader changes to the security architecture, particularly within NATO.

This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

According to the analysts, the Kremlin leader said that the war in Ukraine is a “direct consequence of the West’s disregard for Russia’s interests through NATO expansion, despite alleged public promises not to do so.” In this way, the dictator signalled that he would not be satisfied with a peace settlement that concerns only Ukraine and does not envisage a radical restructuring of NATO.

ISW emphasises that if NATO were to comply with Putin’s ultimatums, which he put forward at the end of 2021 and referred to again in his speech on 15 January 2026, this would lead to the collapse of the Alliance and require a revision of the European security architecture.

“Putin has repeatedly demonstrated that his demands are broader than those outlined in the proposed 28-point US plan and subsequent peace initiatives. Putin remains committed to his original military objectives of 2021 and 2022, which go beyond territory and are not limited to Ukraine,” the report states.

It is worth recalling that Putin’s office has stated under what conditions Russia could use nuclear weapons against Europe.

In addition, Putin is once again speaking about his “objectives” in Ukraine.
