Zelensky calls on partners to fund housing for displaced Ukrainians and support for families of fallen soldiers
During talks in Berlin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raised the issue of international funding to rebuild housing for Ukrainians and provide support for families of soldiers killed in action, according to Suspilne.
He emphasized that this is not just general aid to Ukraine but involves establishing a separate special fund. According to Zelensky, this fund would serve as a mechanism to allow people to return to normal life at home, rather than seeking a future abroad.
The president highlighted the plight of internally displaced persons who lost their homes due to Russian aggression. He stressed that rebuilding destroyed housing requires “tens of billions of dollars”—an amount far beyond the capacity of Ukraine’s budget during wartime. Zelensky estimated the necessary funds at around $70–80 billion and noted that the United States “acknowledges this” and is ready to discuss mechanisms for assistance.
Zelensky believes that compensation for lost housing is key to ensuring that Ukrainians want to stay in the country and have realistic conditions to return from abroad. He stressed that people must feel that the state and its international partners will not leave them alone to face the consequences of war.
For this reason, he called the creation of a special housing reconstruction fund one of the top priorities in negotiations with international allies.
Zelensky previously urged the U.S. president to increase pressure on Russia if peace negotiations fail.
