Uber shareholders have filed a lawsuit against the company's management over passenger safety issues

Uber shareholders have filed a lawsuit against the company’s board of directors and management, accusing them of failing to adequately ensure passenger safety. In their view, this has led to a series of violations, including incidents of sexual assault and harassment.

The shareholders believe that Uber’s management has for years allocated insufficient resources to protect customers and created a culture of non-compliance within the company. In their view, this has harmed users and posed significant legal and regulatory risks to the company.

The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial. They also want Uber to overhaul its corporate governance structure and internal procedures to address the issues raised in the lawsuit.

An Uber spokesperson told Engadget that the lawsuit ignores important facts and is based on false and misleading claims from other court cases. According to the company, it has already responded to these allegations on multiple occasions, both publicly and in court.

This is not the first time Uber has faced such claims. In 2022, more than 500 women filed a lawsuit against the company. They alleged that they had been victims of abductions, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, and other attacks by Uber drivers, according to Reuters.

Earlier, Uber announced a massive investment of over $10 billion in the autonomous transportation sector, marking a shift away from its traditional model of minimizing its own assets. The strategic plan calls for the purchase of thousands of self-driving cars and direct funding for developers of related technologies.

As a reminder, a federal court in Phoenix held Uber liable for sexual assault committed by one of the company’s drivers. The victim, Jaylynn Dean, will receive $8.5 million in compensation—the first such verdict among more than 3,000 similar cases against Uber in the U.S.

Uber Eats has introduced a new AI-powered chatbot called Cart Assistant, designed to simplify and speed up the process of placing grocery orders.
