American Bank Fired Employee Over Request for Full Sleep

American bank Centerview Partners terminated analyst Katherine Shieber after she requested eight hours of sleep per night due to a sleep disorder. Despite her willingness to work 14 hours a day, seven days a week, the employee was quietly dismissed for advocating for adequate rest. She has now filed a lawsuit against the bank.

Court testimony revealed that first-year analysts at the bank are expected to work between 80 and 120 hours per week, often staying up until morning. Tony Kim, a Centerview employee, confirmed that around-the-clock work is possible but rare. Such demanding schedules can severely affect employees with medical conditions.

This case raises critical issues about balancing career demands with personal health in the corporate world and questions the need for more flexible working hours in investment banking. It may prompt the industry to reconsider its approach to employee well-being and health accommodations.
