Sudanese army says it captured Sodiri — Anadolu Agency

The Sudanese army said it had taken control of the city of Sodiri in North Kordofan state after fierce fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). A military statement claimed that the RSF suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment.

Military statement

As Anadolu Agency reports, military sources had earlier said that army units and allied armed movements entered Sodiri and took control of the city after intense fighting with the RSF.

Sodiri had been one of the RSF's key strongholds in the north of North Kordofan. The city is located near Hamrat al-Sheikh and Umm Badr, close to the border with North Darfur state to the west and West Kordofan to the south.

Military personnel and members of armed movements allied with the army posted videos on social media which, they said, were filmed in Sodiri after the city's capture. The footage shows destroyed military equipment that the authors of the recordings said belonged to the RSF. As of 18:45 GMT on September 25, RSF representatives had not commented on the army's statement.

Fighting in North Kordofan

The announcement of Sodiri's capture came amid reports by the Sudanese army of advances in other areas of North Kordofan, including near Al-Mazrouba, Jabra al-Sheikh and Umm Badr. Several days earlier, the army said it had captured 11 areas of the state, and on September 6 it announced that it had established control over Hamrat al-Waz in the Jabra al-Sheikh area.

Since the end of July, the army has also reported capturing the city of Bara, territories around Jabra al-Sheikh and Umm Sayala, and gaining control of the main road linking Bara to Omdurman west of Khartoum. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has continued since April 2023; according to estimates by the UN and international organizations, the war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced about 13 million people.
