Vessel attacked off Oman’s coast, Indian sailor killed — The National

Off the coast of Oman, near the Musandam exclave, the bulk carrier MV Cape Dao, sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, was attacked. As The National reports, one Indian sailor was killed in the incident, while an Omani warship rescued 27 other people from the vessel.

Fire on board

There were 28 crew members aboard the MV Cape Dao. Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said that a fire broke out in the engine room after the attack, killing one sailor.

The incident occurred 4.6 kilometres from Musandam, an Omani exclave bordering the United Arab Emirates. An Omani warship came to the bulk carrier’s aid, rescued 27 people and provided them with medical assistance.

The Indian Embassy in Muscat said it was deeply saddened by the death of the country’s citizen. According to its information, 19 of the 28 crew members were Indians.

Union’s version

The Forward Seamen's Union of India identified the deceased as Suraj Yadav from Uttar Pradesh. According to the organization, two torpedoes struck the vessel — one in the engine room and one in the sailors’ living quarters.

In a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the union called for escorts by Indian ships in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Neither Iran nor the United States claimed responsibility for the strike on the MV Cape Dao.

According to the International Maritime Organization, at least 23 sailors have been killed since the war with Iran began in February. Some vessels were attacked during the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for transporting oil between Iran and the Gulf states.
