The White House attacked a CNN reporter after she asked Trump a question
The White House published personal attacks against CNN’s senior White House correspondent, Kristen Holmes, after she asked U.S. President Donald Trump about remarks made by Democratic Senator John Ossoff. In one of the posts, the administration mentioned the journalist’s children and called her question “disgusting and inhumane,” according to The Guardian.
During a speech on Sunday, Georgia Senator John Ossoff stated that Trump does not want to do the job of a president, but instead wants to build a ballroom and travel with Natalie Harp on a plane gifted by the Emir of Qatar. This was an obvious reference to Harp, the president’s executive assistant, and heightened attention to her alleged closeness to Trump.

During the event in the Oval Office, Holmes asked Trump to comment on Ossoff’s remarks. The president dismissed the question and described the senator as resembling the character P.V. Herman. Later, the White House’s rapid-response account released a video of the conversation, tagged Holmes, and called her a disgrace to the profession. The post also accused the journalist of a “cheap shot” at an administration staffer.
During that same conversation, Trump repeatedly demanded that Holmes shut up, called her disrespectful, and—after CNN was mentioned—labeled her a “fake journalist” who spreads “fake news.” CNN responded by stating that Holmes had asked a complex, relevant, and important question for society. The network emphasized that officials may criticize coverage with which they disagree, but personal attacks on journalists for asking questions are incompatible with the principles of a free press.
