The hotel booking service Booking.com is sending emails to customers warning that unauthorized individuals may have gained access to some of their data related to past or future bookings.
This was reported byBBC News.
According to the company, attackers may have obtained booking details, email addresses, names, phone numbers, and other information that users provided to hotel administrations. At the same time, the service emphasized that there was no access to customers’ financial information.
Booking.com urged users to be vigilant due to the risk of phishing attacks. The company emphasized that it never requests credit card information via email, phone, messaging apps, or SMS, nor does it ask for transfers not specified in the booking terms.
Additionally, the service announced an update to booking PIN codes to enhance security. One user told TechCrunch that he had previously received a phishing message on WhatsApp containing his personal data and booking information, which may indicate the use of stolen data.
Experts are warning of a possible new wave of fraud stemming from this incident. The cybersecurity company Norton noted that similar schemes have been used before: scammers pose as hotel representatives and attempt to extort money by citing fabricated booking issues.
Booking.com did not specify how many users may have been affected, but advised users to take additional steps to protect their devices, including installing antivirus software.
