In the United Kingdom, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has accused King Charles III of gaslighting following a Buckingham Palace statement regarding excerpts from his forthcoming memoir. This was reported by NBC News.
The palace said that the pain of losing a sibling can cloud the mind, affect judgment and color memories even many years after such a loss. Spencer called the statement provocative and said it effectively casts doubt on the truthfulness of his words without a direct denial from the king.
Dispute over Diana’s funeral
In an excerpt published ahead of the book’s release, Spencer describes a tense telephone conversation with the then-Prince Charles about organizing Diana’s funeral. According to him, an angry Charles allegedly said that Diana would be “soon forgotten.”
Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, a year after her official divorce from the then-Prince Charles. Spencer’s memoir is devoted to the breakdown of their marriage and the aftermath of his sister’s death.

In other excerpts, Spencer writes that during a telephone conversation immediately after Diana’s death, Charles, in his view, sounded overly cheerful. The author also mentions his sister’s mental health and her accounts of difficulties in the marriage at an early stage.
Memoir release and family reaction
Spencer’s book, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” is due to be released on Tuesday. He denied that he was publishing the memoir for money and said that, as a historian, he considers telling the truth to be his primary duty.
After its initial statement, Buckingham Palace did not comment on other claims from the book. The palace did not promptly respond to NBC News’ request for additional comment. Princes William and Harry have also not publicly commented on the memoir.
In a separate interview, Spencer said that the British tabloids’ treatment of Harry and his wife Meghan Markle has similarities with what Diana experienced.
