Denmark plans to continue resisting U.S. pressure regarding Greenland
Denmark’s new center-left government has announced its intention to resist U.S. pressure regarding Greenland, strengthen the country’s defense capabilities, and implement sweeping socioeconomic reforms to address the cost-of-living crisis.
This refers to a coalition agreement between Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, the Social Liberals, the Green Left, and the centrist Moderates, which ended the period of political uncertainty following the elections.
The government emphasized that one of its key priorities will be to protect the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland.
“The government will firmly defend the sovereignty of the kingdom, territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination,” the coalition program states.
It also calls for intensifying diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. and NATO regarding Greenland’s status.
The document notes that Denmark’s armed forces will continue to expand amid concerns about the security situation and the U.S. role in European defense.
To secure the support of left-wing parties, the government has promised a series of social initiatives, including:
- halving the VAT on food
- a complete elimination of VAT on fruits and vegetables
- free public transportation for young people under 22
- free dental care for 10 years
According to the government, these measures are aimed at addressing the cost-of-living crisis.
Separately, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated her intention to continue adhering to a strict immigration policy.
“This is absolutely necessary for the cohesion of our society, and that is why we want to deport more foreign criminals,” she said.
The new government was formed after several months of negotiations, which were complicated by the collapse of previous agreements between political forces and shifts in coalition dynamics following the election.

As a reminder, the U.S. is opening a new consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and this has already sparked protests from local residents, who view the increased American presence as political pressure. At the same time, Washington is actively increasing its interest in the island due to its strategic importance in the Arctic.
The U.S. has stated that Greenland could become an alternative to oil routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which are currently under threat due to tensions with Iran. Washington believes that the island is capable of significantly influencing the global oil market.
