US Democrats may investigate Trump family business — Jerusalem Post

In the United States, Democrats may launch investigations into the business operations of President Donald Trump’s family and companies connected to it if they gain control of the House of Representatives or the Senate in the November midterm elections. Control of at least one chamber of Congress would give them the authority to issue subpoenas for documents and expand investigative staff. According to the Jerusalem Post, citing Reuters, the inquiries could begin as early as February.

Possible areas of investigation

Among the first subjects of scrutiny could be corporate donors to Trump’s ballroom and participants in business deals made by members of his family. Democrats also name Trump-linked cryptocurrency companies and the venture firm 1789 Capital, linked to Donald Trump Jr., among the potential areas. Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal cautioned that there is not yet a final list of investigative targets.

Raskin separately drew attention to a $620 million Pentagon loan to the rare-earth metals startup Vulcan Elements. The loan was announced about three months after an investment by 1789 Capital. A Vulcan Elements representative told Reuters that the company did not ask investors to help secure the loan and is prepared to cooperate with Congress in good faith.

Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse also released a report alleging that oil and gas companies received tax breaks, subsidies and eased environmental regulations after Trump asked them for $1 billion in donations during the 2024 campaign.

Questions about Kushner and reactions from the sides

Raskin said that Congress would need to hear from Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and an executive associated with Affinity Partners. According to the lawmaker, Kushner did not respond to two letters concerning the activities of his private investment company with Middle Eastern governments and monarchies while representing the United States in diplomatic negotiations. Raskin called the deals that Kushner, according to him, made with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as a presidential envoy a conflict of interest.

Kushner’s lawyer Chad Mizelle called the allegations false and said that no one had identified a specific rule or norm that Kushner allegedly violated. 1789 Capital has already hired the law firm Quinn Emanuel to work on congressional investigations and said it welcomes lawful congressional oversight but does not intend to become hostage to political games.

Blumenthal said that if the Senate comes under Democratic control, they will use their subpoena powers. The White House criticized the possible investigations, calling them baseless attempts to obstruct the president’s policies. Republican Senator Kevin Cramer said Democrats may face a voter backlash if they focus on Trump’s personal life and affairs.
