Donald Trump threatened to impose a toll on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz
On June 20, Donald Trump stated that a fee might be imposed on merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz following an agreement with Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that tolls could be imposed for transit through the Strait of Hormuz if Washington and Tehran are unable to reach a final agreement.
In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. leader noted that the funds would be collected as payment for the “Guardian Angel” services that the United States provides to countries in the Middle East. According to him, this move is intended to cover past, present, and future U.S. expenses in the region.
Trump emphasized that no fees will be charged during the 60-day ceasefire period, nor after its conclusion, unless the United States imposes them on its own due to the absence of a signed agreement.
CNN reports that the current memorandum of understanding between the countries does not provide a clear answer to the question of whether Iran will retain control over this waterway. Currently, the document guarantees free passage for ships only for a two-month period allotted to Iran and other Gulf countries to draft a new joint agreement regarding the strait, which potentially opens the door for Tehran to impose its own tolls in the future.
At the same time, throughout this week, the White House chief has repeatedly insisted that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz must remain completely free of charge both during the 60-day window and after it expires.

Earlier, Trump stated that Iran would not receive any money under the new agreement.
Iran has proven to be a tough nut to crack for Washington, according to the director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary Iran.
Trump called the deal with Iran an unconditional surrender.
