DR Congo announces intention to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
The Democratic Republic of Congo has announced its intention to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing a joint statement by the two states following the visit of DR Congo President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi.

The statement says that the parties will take steps to move DR Congo’s diplomatic mission from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. No specific timeframe for the move was announced.
During their meeting, Tshisekedi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also declared their shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations. According to the publication, the DR Congo president has spoken positively about Israel for several years and explained his support through his Christian faith.
Status of Jerusalem
Most states that recognize Israel maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv, as Jerusalem’s status is to be determined as part of a final settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In 2018, during his first presidential term, Donald Trump moved the US embassy to Jerusalem. Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay subsequently took similar steps. Kosovo and Somaliland, which are not UN member states, also opened missions in Jerusalem that they consider embassies.
Several weeks before DR Congo’s statement, Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, also announced his intention to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem. Argentine President Javier Milei had previously made a similar promise, but the move has not yet taken place.
Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it, declaring the city its eternal and indivisible capital.
