The Danube has receded so much that the wreckage of a ship has become visible above the water
In the southern section of the Danube, the water level has dropped so much that the wreckage of a ship from World War II has become visible. Due to the shallowing waters, navigation has already had to be restricted, and experts fear the situation will worsen further.
It is noted that a sandbar and the passage under the Margit Bridge are often visible on the Danube. According to one passerby, it is far more important for the government to focus on saving Lake Velence.
“Meanwhile, in the lower reaches of the Danube, the water level has dropped to a historic low—so much so that even the wreckage of a World War II-era ship has become visible near Mohács,” the publication adds.
The situation is worst in the city of Baja (Hungary), where some branches of the Sugovica River have almost completely dried up, and the wildlife has perished. On the worst day, the water depth was only 14 centimeters, which is half the previous record low.
At the same time, Csaba Aboni, head of the flood protection and river management department at the local Water Resources Authority, stated that it is not the current situation but the trend itself that is causing the greatest concern.
“If we look at how many times over the past 125 years the water level has dropped below 100 centimeters—which is quite low—we see that this has happened 21 times. Of those, 14 times have been in the last 25 years,” the publication quotes the official as saying.
Abon emphasized that what scientists have always been saying appears to be confirmed—the Danube is also expected to experience increasingly frequent and prolonged periods of low water levels.
The expert added that even when there was insufficient rainfall in the past, melting snow from the Alps compensated for the water shortage. However, due to global warming, the glaciers have shrunk dramatically, leaving almost no reserves.
“The biggest problem is that, in the case of rivers, you can’t simply open a canal to replenish the water, as you would with a pond; instead, you have to wait until more water comes from somewhere and the impact of climate change becomes less noticeable. As a result, people are completely dependent on nature,” the article emphasized.
