CDD-Ghana expert urges against politicizing cocaine seizure — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, John Osae-Kwapong, a representative of the Centre for Democratic Development, CDD-Ghana, called on the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress not to turn the cocaine seizure case linked to the country into mutual political accusations. He stressed the need to protect Ghana’s international reputation and develop a bipartisan approach to further action.

Cocaine seizure in France

The case concerns nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine seized by French customs at the port of Dunkirk. The drugs were found in a container sent from Ghana.

The incident raised questions about how the cargo passed export controls in the country. As MyJoyOnline reports, Osae-Kwapong said that disputes over the responsibility of individual governments or parties could distract from the key issues in the case.

Doubts over a parliamentary inquiry

Ghana’s parliamentary minority called for a parliamentary inquiry into cocaine seizure cases, citing serious national security risks. At the same time, Osae-Kwapong expressed doubt that a new parliamentary inquiry would produce results, referring to the conclusions of previous reviews.

In his view, the first priority should be to identify the vulnerabilities exposed by this incident and reach bipartisan consensus on measures to protect Ghana’s reputation and prevent similar incidents.
