Al Gore calls for an end to atmospheric pollution
Former US Vice President Al Gore said in an interview in Singapore that humanity must stop “using the sky as an open sewer” to avoid the catastrophic consequences of climate change. The climate activist stressed that the predictions discussed in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth 20 years ago had proven accurate.
As Channel NewsAsia reports, Gore said that 175 million tonnes of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere every day. According to him, accumulated emissions retain additional heat comparable to the energy released by the explosion of 800,000 early-generation atomic bombs every day.
Risks to ice and coastlines
Gore noted that the period from 2015 to 2025 was the warmest 11-year period in the history of global observations. According to him, scientists predict a new temperature record this year, while the figure could be even higher in 2027 because of a “super El Niño.”
Warming oceans intensify the water cycle, contributing to exceptionally heavy rainfall while also causing longer and deeper droughts that threaten agriculture, the former vice president said. He also warned that 80% of Himalayan ice could disappear by the end of the century if the world does not change course.

According to Gore, Greenland loses about 30 million tonnes of ice every hour, while Antarctica is increasingly contributing to sea-level rise. The combination of rising sea levels and stronger storm surges poses a threat to low-lying areas, including Singapore, he noted.
Transition to clean energy
At the same time, Gore called the transition away from fossil fuels irreversible, citing falling costs of solar and wind energy, batteries and electric vehicles. He said that one in four cars sold worldwide is electric, while global investments in renewable energy and the sustainable transition have already exceeded investments in fossil fuels.
The former vice president also criticized the concept of “climate realism,” which envisages maintaining dependence on fossil fuels during the energy transition. In his view, the political influence of companies working with fossil fuels is slowing change in certain countries, including the United States.
Gore arrived in Singapore to conduct a two-day training session for around 800 climate activists. The program is intended to provide participants with up-to-date knowledge of climate science, solutions to address the climate crisis and ways to communicate these issues to the public.
