The EU has begun to take into account the "unpredictability" of the U.S. following Trump's return

The European Union has begun to take into account the unpredictability of the United States one year after Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas in an interview with Reuters.

“We (the EU – ed.) are America’s allies, but lately we haven’t really understood their moves… We are also ready to invest effort in our relationship within the framework of the transatlantic partnership, which is facing serious challenges. But it takes two to tango. In any relationship, there are two sides. So let’s consider what we can do together. And if our involvement is needed here or there, we also expect to be consulted,” she noted.

Kallas emphasized that over the past year, U.S. policy has become less predictable.

“I think that after this year, it has become quite clear that the word we need to keep in mind is ‘unpredictability.’ So now we’re more at ease because we expect unpredictable things to happen all the time, and we take it as it is, keep a cool head, and stay calm and focused,” she added.

In the context of a potential war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran, the diplomat noted that European countries had tried to dissuade the parties from launching hostilities.

“We held these discussions, and the main concern of European countries is that we were not consulted regarding the start of this war; in fact, it was the opposite. Many Europeans tried to convince the U.S. and Israel not to start this war,” she said.

At the same time, Kallas commented on Washington’s calls for allies to participate in ensuring the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“As I said yesterday, member states currently have no desire to change the mandate of this operation, especially since the Red Sea also remains important. So no one is ready to put their people in danger in the Strait of Hormuz,” she emphasized.

She also stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution to the situation.

“We must find diplomatic ways to keep the strait open and prevent a food crisis, a crisis in the fertilizer sector, and a crisis in the energy sector,” the head of European diplomacy concluded.

Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas commended France, Belgium, and Sweden for their actions in combating Russia’s “shadow fleet.” She noted these countries’ efforts to detain vessels belonging to a network of tankers used to circumvent sanctions.

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, stated that EU countries are not interested in concluding new energy agreements with Russia. According to her, policy toward Moscow is being discussed at closed-door meetings in Brussels, but no new agreements in the energy sector are planned at this time.
