Estonia scrambled Turkish fighter jets in response to the threat of a drone attack
On the night of September 1, the Estonian Defense Forces issued a warning about a possible air threat to residents of eight counties. The warning was triggered by drones that entered the country’s airspace.
Initially, residents of Lääne-Maakunta and Ida-Viru County received the warning, and later an air raid alert was issued in six additional counties.
According to the Estonian military, several drones were moving along the eastern border between Estonia and Latvia. Some of them crossed into Estonian airspace.
Colonel Uku Arold, head of the Strategic Communications Department of the Estonian Defense Forces, confirmed that the military had detected the drones’ movement.
“Drones were detected moving parallel to the eastern border of Estonia, as well as the eastern border of Latvia, and entered Estonian territory, so we also declared a state of alert,” Arold said.
Turkish fighter jets were scrambled to search for the drones. They are participating in a NATO mission to patrol the airspace of the Baltic states.
Thus, Estonia’s allied forces were involved in responding to a potential air threat as part of a joint NATO mission.
Around 6:00 a.m., the air alert in Estonia was lifted. The military did not provide any separate reports on the further circumstances of the drones’ flight or their origin.
The situation drew attention because the drones approached Estonia’s eastern border and some of them entered the country’s airspace.

In Romania, an air raid alert was declared on the morning of August 30 in part of Tulcea County due to an unidentified aerial target near the border with Ukraine. To monitor the situation, the Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets.
On the evening of Monday, August 24, Romania scrambled two F-18 fighter jets from the Spanish Air and Space Forces after detecting two aerial targets moving toward the Romanian border.
