UN General Assembly backs resolution on Palestinian participation — Anadolu Agency

In the United States, the UN General Assembly supported a resolution calling on Washington to immediately reverse the decision that prevents the Palestinian delegation from participating in person in the 81st session. According to Anadolu Agency, citing the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 152 countries voted for the document.

Voting in the General Assembly

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry stated that the US decision violates the UN Headquarters Agreement. The ministry thanked the countries that co-sponsored and supported the resolution, calling the vote a rejection of attempts to prevent Palestine from taking part in the work of the General Assembly.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8. General debate within the session is due to begin on September 22.

Abbas's address and US restrictions

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address the General Assembly by video on the scheduled date and time, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier the same day, Washington extended visa restrictions for officials of the Palestinian Authority and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization. According to the source, this will prevent Abbas and other senior Palestinian officials from attending high-level meetings in New York in person.

The US State Department said the restrictions were related to what Washington sees as the Palestinian leadership's failure to meet commitments and its actions that undermine prospects for peace. Palestinian authorities rejected this explanation, calling it unfounded.
