Nepal’s Foreign Minister Khanal holds meetings in New York — Kathmandu Post
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal held bilateral meetings in New York, United States, with officials from Bhutan, Japan, Poland and the European Commission on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The talks focused on climate justice, Nepal’s political transition and support for recovery after the recent floods in Bhotekoshi, Kathmandu Post reports.
Cooperation with Bhutan and Japan
At a meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, the sides discussed bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation on climate change. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry noted that both mountain countries drew attention to more frequent and intense natural disasters. Tobgay expressed Bhutan’s solidarity with Nepal and wished recovery to communities affected by the floods.
During talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, the Japanese side expressed condolences to the victims of the natural disaster. According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Tokyo intends to support Nepal from the emergency phase through medium- and long-term recovery. The assistance includes humanitarian supplies, an emergency grant of $3 million through international and other organizations, the deployment of specialists to assist with identification, and DNA testing equipment.

Khanal thanked Japan for its support and said that the Nepalese authorities would make every effort to search for and rescue foreigners, including Japanese citizens, whose fate remains unknown. The sides also noted the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan.
Talks with Poland and the European Commission
At a meeting with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, the diplomats discussed the development of relations and the expansion of bilateral cooperation, as well as more effective interaction at multilateral platforms, including the UN. A Polish statement said that Sikorski condemned the exploitation of Nepalese citizens in the Russian army.
Khanal also met with European Commission Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera. They discussed the Nepal-EU partnership, as well as cooperation on the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas affected by flooding in Bhotekoshi.
