Hotels in Sochi are losing tourists in droves due to the oil spill and drone attacks

Hotels in Sochi are losing tourists in droves due to the oil spill and drone attacks

Hotels in Sochi, Russia, have faced a sharp drop in demand ahead of the summer season. This is due to environmental problems in the Black Sea and regular drone attacks, which are disrupting transportation infrastructure.

Although hotel owners have been forced to significantly lower room rates, this has not yet helped bring tourists back.

According to the tourism industry, only 25–30% of hotel rooms have been booked for the summer, while accommodation costs in May fell by more than 15%.

Experts note that the downward price trend has been ongoing for several months. While prices fell by 6.8% year-over-year in February, the decline reached 12.9% in April and 15.4% in May.

At the same time, hotel occupancy rates are also declining. From January to April, occupancy at coastal establishments fell by 14.2%, and in the mountain cluster—by 5.9%.

One of the main reasons cited for this decline is the restrictions on operations at Sochi Airport due to the implementation of the “Carpet” plan, which is regularly activated in response to drone attacks.

Daria Nemkova, a representative of Hotel Advisors, noted: “Guests are now very cautious about choosing trips to Sochi. Stability and safety are important to them.”

Representatives of the tourism industry express a similar view. According to them, demand for vacations in Sochi is also declining due to environmental problems on the Black Sea coast.

In particular, the oil spill following tanker accidents in late 2024, as well as new instances of coastal pollution after drone attacks on ships in the Black and Azov Seas, have had a negative impact on the region’s tourist appeal.

In addition, local residents and tourists have reported the appearance of oil slicks on the beaches of Anapa and the consequences of oil spills in the Tuapse area following strikes on oil refining infrastructure.

The combination of security risks and environmental problems continues to negatively impact the tourist season in Sochi, forcing the hotel industry to lower prices in an attempt to attract vacationers.

This is reported by Russian media.

On the night of June 2, an air raid alert was declared in the Leningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation due to a drone attack. Russian authorities reported a massive drone raid and imposed restrictions on operations at St. Petersburg Airport.

Following the nighttime drone attack on the St. Petersburg oil terminal, new details emerged regarding the scale of the fire. According to Russian and OSINT sources, the fire at the facility turned out to be significantly more severe than initially reported in official statements.

Earlier, a large-scale fire broke out in St. Petersburg following a drone attack.
