The Georgian Orthodox Church has elected a new Patriarch
The Georgian Orthodox Church has elected a new Primate—Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) has become the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.
The decision was made by the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In recent years, Metropolitan Shio served as locum tenens and was considered the likely successor to Ilia II, who died in March of this year.
The new Primate was born in Tbilisi in 1969, received his education in Georgia and abroad, and has long been involved in church administration.
The enthronement of the new Patriarch is scheduled for May 12 at the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta.
Metropolitan Epiphanius, Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, has already congratulated Metropolitan Shio on his election.
