Guterres expresses regret over US visa denial to Abbas — Cyprus Mail

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deepest regret in the United States over the decision by US authorities to deny a visa to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for the second time in a row. This decision will prevent Abbas from participating in the UN General Assembly session scheduled for next week.

UN Secretary-General’s position

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that Guterres is concerned about the consequences of the decision for the ability of the State of Palestine to fully participate in the work of the United Nations. This was reported by Cyprus Mail.

US State Department decision

The US State Department said on Thursday that it had denied visas to the Palestinian delegation, which includes Mahmoud Abbas. The department explained the decision by the lack of reforms in the Palestinian Authority.

Only members of the Palestinian mission to the UN will be able to participate in this year’s annual General Assembly session.
