Iran says it has no plans for talks with the US — Asharq Al-Awsat

The Iranian delegation in New York, United States, for the UN General Assembly does not plan talks with the United States. This was reported by the state-run IRNA agency, citing an unnamed source close to the delegation.

As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, the statement came after US President Donald Trump told Axios that he expected talks to resume soon. According to IRNA, the Iranian side conveyed its position to Washington through a Qatari mediator, and the delegation is due to return to Tehran on Tuesday.

Tehran's conditions

Iran says it has proposed seven conditions for ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran's demands include a seven-day ceasefire in the Middle East, including in Lebanon, the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, the lifting of sanctions on the oil sector, and an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports.

According to the publication, Trump rejected these demands on Saturday. The day before, he also did not accept Tehran's proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.

Possible indirect contacts

Axios reported that indirect talks mediated by Qatar could have taken place as early as Monday. Less than a week before that, according to the publication, similar contacts took place between US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat's account, the Strait of Hormuz became the center of the conflict that began after US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February. The publication notes that before the war, about 20% of global oil and gas supplies passed through the strait. After the strikes, Tehran restricted traffic through the strait, while Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. The United States has not struck Iran since September 1, although vessels in the strait have regularly come under attack.
