Iranian sources report Kamran Hekmati released from Evin Prison in Tehran

Iranian sources reported that Iranian-American Jew Kamran Hekmati was released from Tehran’s Evin Prison on Saturday. At the same time, he is subject to a ban on leaving Iran and therefore cannot return to the United States. This was reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Exit ban

Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed Hekmati’s release and have not disclosed the terms under which he was freed. It is unknown when, or whether, the ban on leaving the country will be lifted.

Arrest over trip to Israel

Hekmati was arrested in July 2025. A court in Tehran sentenced him over a trip to Israel 13 years ago, when he traveled there to celebrate his son’s bar mitzvah. According to his family and organizations assisting with the case, the trial lasted about 10 minutes and took place without a lawyer and without hearing witnesses. This trip became central to the verdict that led to Hekmati’s imprisonment.
