An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 shook Spain overnight
On the night of August 14, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck the province of Granada in southern Spain. The tremors were felt not only in Granada, but also in various areas of the neighboring province of Málaga and in the city of Málaga itself.
The earthquake occurred at 1:04 a.m. local time. According to the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), its epicenter was located in the municipality of Alendín in the province of Granada. The earthquake’s focus was at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
The tremors were felt in Granada and Málaga
Strong tremors were felt in many towns in the central part of the province of Granada. The 112 emergency service of the Andalusian Emergency Agency received reports from residents in various areas.
In particular, residents of Granada, La Subía, Churriana de la Vega, Las Gabías, Ojijares, and Marasena reported feeling the tremors. However, the earthquake was felt much farther from the epicenter. The tremors were particularly strong in the province of Málaga and the city of the same name. Residents of Málaga also reported noticeable shaking of buildings.
There was another earthquake before the stronger one
This was not the first earthquake of the night. The day before, on Friday at approximately 6:43 p.m., tremors had already been recorded in the Granada area. That earthquake had a magnitude of 3.7. Its epicenter was located in the municipality of La Subía.
The tremors were also felt in Granada and the surrounding areas. A few hours later, a much stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck. It was this quake that frightened the region’s residents the most and was felt at a considerable distance from the epicenter.
What is known about the aftermath
So far, there have been no reports of serious damage or fatalities resulting from the earthquake. Emergency services continued to gather information about the situation in the towns and villages where people felt the tremors. Experts are monitoring seismic activity in the region. Aftershocks may occur following the main earthquake, but their intensity and timing are unknown in advance.
The earthquake in Granada was yet another significant seismic event for southern Spain. This time, the tremors spread far beyond the area where the epicenter was located and were felt, in particular, by residents of Málaga. This was reported by Sur in English.
Spain’s Ministry of Ecology launched an investigation after the orca Tonya was spotted in the Strait of Gibraltar with marks on her dorsal fin. The ministry stated that these marks are consistent with shots from an air gun.
