Israeli brother and sister evacuated from Nepal after landslides — Jerusalem Post

Israeli brother and sister, 27-year-old Maya Lamdan and 21-year-old Nadav Lamdan, were evacuated by helicopter to Kathmandu, Nepal, after being in the village of Samagaun in the Manaslu trekking region during heavy rains and landslides. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

According to Maya Lamdan, the travelers decided to stay in the village when they saw a rain front approaching rather than continue their route. She said they were without electricity and heating for about 12 hours while temperatures dropped below zero.

Danger at night

At night, Lamdan said, the rain intensified, and at about 3 a.m. someone knocked on the door of their room and warned them of a possible flood. People were asked to climb onto the roof. They later learned that two landslides had occurred nearby, while another three or four smaller ones took place during the day.

Lamdan said local residents ran from the village to the hills in panic, using headlamps. She, her brother and friends underwent examinations at a hospital in Kathmandu after the evacuation. According to her, all of them are physically healthy and safe, but psychological recovery will take time.

Help for other tourists

Five other Israelis were traveling with Maya, while at least 10 other Israeli citizens were in Samagaun during the bad weather. Lamdan said she knew of tourists who had remained in the area and were also receiving assistance.

The emergency assistance center of insurance company PassportCard said it was helping dozens of Israeli travelers in Nepal. The company had information on 17 insured tourists in the Annapurna region, 17 in the Manaslu area, four in the Tsum Valley and two in the Everest area. Four of them needed medical assistance, but according to the company, none was in a life-threatening condition.

Due to the bad weather, travel was restricted in many areas of Nepal, roads were blocked and trekking was suspended. Clal Insurance and Finance reported that three of its insured tourists had already been evacuated to Kathmandu, while another seven were being rescued and were awaiting transfer to Kathmandu and Pokhara.
